I’M FLYING DURING THE HOLIDAYS… WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MY HEARING AIDS?

Good afternoon! Maybe coincidence, maybe the change in weather, I had two different patients asking me the same question today: “Are there any factors I should consider while flying with my hearing aids?”

We put together a short answer for everyone to read and share.

AT THE SECURITY CHECKPOINT:

It is suggested to wear your hearing aids when going through the metal detector or body scanner. Hearing aid companies have confirmed that going though these detectors will NOT damage hearing aids, whether they are battery powered or rechargeable. You do NOT have to turn the hearing aids off either. Better to hear any important announcements! Finally, TSA security officers are trained to identify hearing aids and provide assistance to passengers with hearing loss, so do not hesitate to request assistance if needed.

INSIDE THE AIRPLANE:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not require turning hearing aids off during take-off and landing, as you would have to do with other electronics. If you want some silence or sound distractions, you may take them off, turn down the volume, or enable the tinnitus sound generator (I frequently use that last feature to relax during a flight). Finally, if your ears feel plugged it is because of the change in cabin pressure and it does not have to do with wearing hearing aids. Just drink some water or chew gum to equalize the pressure.

Wherever your destination is, don’t forget to take the hearing aids with you. During these special holidays, enjoy all sounds and conversations. If you have any further questions about flying or any other activity with your hearing aids, give us a call. Bon Voyage!
